One Piece – Filler and Canon Episodes

One Piece isn’t exactly an anime overloaded with filler episodes, even though it’s an extensive series with over 1,000 episodes.

So how many filler episodes are there? Roughly 12%, or around 99 episodes, were added to the main storyline to keep the anime from catching up to Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

These filler episodes feature plots that differ from the manga, often used to promote franchise films or give Eiichiro Oda more time to continue the manga without being overtaken by the anime.

It’s also worth noting that, despite the relatively low number of filler episodes, One Piece typically adapts only one to one and a half manga chapters per anime episode. This means some episodes can feel drawn out.

Another important point is the sheer length of the anime, with over 960 episodes released so far. Even if we exclude One Piece’s fillers, watching only the canon episodes is still equivalent to watching the entirety of Naruto almost three times.

One Piece follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young man with rubber powers whose dream is to become the King of the Pirates, along with his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates.
